· Please note that the battery supplying the current
must have the same voltage (12 volts) and
approximately the same capacity (printed on the
battery) as the discharged battery.
2. Depending on the type of fuse, grasp it by inserting
the corresponding side of the pliers from above or
from the side ÿ fig. 225.
3. Pull out the fuse.
· Never confuse the positive pole of the battery with the
negative pole or connect the jump leads incorrectly.
4. If the fuse has blown, replace it with a new one of
the same amperage rating (same color and
engraving) and the same size ÿ .
· Position the starter cables so that they never come
into contact with rotating parts in the engine
compartment.
5. After inserting the new fuse, if necessary return
it will fit the plastic clips into the cover.
6. Replace the cover or close the fuse box cover.
· Observe the instruction manual of the manufacturer
of the jumper cables.
· Observe the owner's manual of the vehicle that
provides the starting aid.
WARNING
If a fuse is replaced by one with a higher amperage,
damage could occur elsewhere in the electrical system.
WARNING
During starting aid, a highly explosive detonating gas
mixture forms in the 12-volt battery.
starting aid
· Always keep the 12-volt battery away from places
where sparks or flames are produced, open flames
or incandescent cigarettes.
Introduction to the topic
Never use a mobile phone when connecting
and disconnect the jumper cables.
For technical reasons it is not permitted to tow-start
the vehicle ÿ .
If the engine cannot be started because the 12-volt
battery is discharged, a 12-volt battery from another
vehicle can be used for this.
WARNING
When the 12-volt battery is discharged, it can freeze
at temperatures approaching 0°C (+32°F).
Suitable jumper cables are required for the starting aid.
· Never charge a 12 volt battery that is frozen or thawed.
The section of the starting cables must be:
— For vehicles with a gasoline engine: 25 mm2
As minimum
Always replace the 12 volt battery if it is
frozen or has been.
— For vehicles with a diesel engine: 35 mm2 co
minimum mo
WARNING
On vehicles with a 12-volt battery in the boot, connect
the jumper cables only to the starting aid sockets in
the engine compartment.
To avoid considerable damage to the vehicle's
electrical system, please note the following: · If the
jumper cables are connected incorrectly, a short circuit
may occur.
· Do not allow the vehicles to come into contact,
otherwise the current could begin to flow as soon as
the positive poles are connected.
WARNING
If the jumper cables are used improperly and the
jump start aid is used incorrectly, the 12 volt battery
could explode and cause serious injury. To reduce this
risk of explosion, please note the following: Before
doing any work on the battery, always read and heed
Use only jump leads with clamps
completely isolated.

The discharged 12 volt battery must be properly
connected to the on-board network.
Do not allow vehicles to touch. Otherwise it could
start passing current as soon as the positive poles of
the batteries are connected.

Make sure that the clamps connected to the poles
have sufficient metal contact.
If the engine does not start after 10 seconds, abort
starting and try again after approx. 1 minute.

to connect the black jump-start cable ÿ fig. 226.
If the engine still does not start, seek help from
an appropriately qualified specialist workshop.

7. Position the starter cables so that they cannot be reached by
any rotating part in the engine compartment.
· Also, make sure that the cable connected to the positive
pole of the 12 volt battery does not come into contact with
electrically conductive parts of the vehicle.
Vehicles with the 12 volt battery in the male

through the sockets provided for this purpose
(positive pole + and ground terminal –).
· Avoid electrostatic discharges in the area of the 12 volt
battery. If sparks were to fly, the detonating gas escaping
from the battery could ignite.
start the engine
1. Start the engine of the power-supplying vehicle and let it idle.
· Never use the jump start if the 12 volt battery is damaged or
frozen, or if it has been thawed.
2. Start the engine of the vehicle with the discharged 12 volt
battery and wait 2 to 3 minutes for the engine to “crank
over”.
WARNING
After using the starting aid, have the 12 volt battery checked by
a qualified specialist workshop. Volkswagen recommends a
Volkswagen dealer.
Disconnect jumper cables
1. If the dipped beam is on, turn it off before disconnecting the
jumper cables.
2. Connect the fan of the air conditioner or the system
heating and ventilation issue and turn on the heated rear
window of the vehicle with the discharged 12 volt battery
Tow
to reduce voltage spikes that may occur when disconnecting
the cables.
Introduction to the topic
Towing a vehicle takes practice, especially when using a tow rope.
Both drivers should be familiar with the ins and outs of towing.
Inexperienced drivers should refrain from towing.
3. With the engines running, disconnect the AC
starting cables only in the order D – C – B – A ÿ fig. 228 or
ÿ fig. 229.
4. If necessary, close the battery cover or the socket cover for
starting aid ÿ p. 324.
Observe the legal provisions regarding towing.
5. After using the starting aid, have the 12 volt battery checked
by a qualified specialist workshop. Volkswagen recommends
When towing, make sure at all times that no impermissible
tractive forces or jerks are generated. On tracks without firm
ground there is always the danger of overloading the fixing parts.
a Volkswagen dealer.
WARNING
Tow
If jump starting aid is used improperly, the 12 volt battery
could explode and cause serious injury. To reduce the risk
of a battery exploding, note the following:
Towing means pulling a vehicle from another that is not in a
condition to circulate.
The vehicle can be towed with a tow bar or cable:
· Always wear suitable eye protection and protective gloves,
and never lean over the 12 volt battery.
— The maximum speed allowed is 50 km/h (30 mph).
— The maximum distance allowed is 50 km (30 miles).
· Connect the connection cables in the correct order: first the
positive cable, and then the negative cable.
The tow bar is safer for towing and prevents damage to the
vehicle.
