Minimum curing periods for bonded winβ

Note
β¦ There are special requirements for renewing bonded windows.
β¦ The vehicle is safe to use only after the minimum curing period
has elapsed.
The minimum curing period for 2-component adhesive is 2 hours
for all windows.

Minimum curing period is the time from bonding the window until
vehicle may be used. During this time, the vehicle must be standβ
ing on a level surface at room temperature (at least 15Β°C).

Window repair
Note
β¦ Before renewing windscreen, explore possibilities of repairing
damage to glass.
β¦ Damaged windscreens can be repaired with the window repair
kit - VAS 6092- .
β¦ This damage must not exceed a certain size or position.
β¦ Each window repair kit comes with a set of instructions.

1.3.1
Fitting instructions
β Apply adhesive sealing material -1- in continuous bead, holdβ
lk
ing applicator at right angle to window -2-.
β¦ Adhere to the specified dimensions for the adhesive beads.
β¦ Using 2 suction lifters - V.A.G 1344- , install glass pane in winβ
dow aperture, align to centre and press in onto spacing lip.
β¦ Replace stickers (e.g. for airbag) if there were any.

Double cartridge gun - VAS 5237- must be used to apply these
materials.

Heat according to manufacturerβs instructions using cartridge
heater - V.A.G 1939- .

Small cartridge, 180 ml, for sealing and/or when a 400 ml douβ
ble cartridge alone is not sufficient.

The cutting cords stated above can be used alternatively to the
cutting wires, and vice versa. They are designated for single use.
1.4
Preparing old undamaged windows for
fitting
Note
β¦ Side windows without centring pins can be installed.
β¦ Centring pins are only relevant for production.
β¦ If required, the window can be fixed in place with adhesive tape
during the curing period.
Cutting back adhesive bead

β¦ If an undamaged window is being re-used, cut back the residβ
ual adhesive sealant to 1 to 2 mm shortly before bonding it
back in.
β¦ Do not damage primer and ceramic coating when doing this.
β¦ Keep bonding surface free of dirt and grease.
β¦ Do not treat bonding surface with activator, glass/paint primer
or cleaning solution immediately after cutting back.
β¦ The remaining material is required as a base for better adheβ
sion of the new adhesive sealing material to be applied.
β’
Exception: if bonding is performed later than one day after
cutting back adhesive bead, the remaining residual material
must be activated with activator .
β Apply activator evenly in one stroke using applicator .
NOTICE
Risk of damage to paintwork from activator.
β Apply activator neatly onto adhesive bead, do not spill.
Allow to air dry for approx. 10 minutes.

Preparing new windows for installing
Note
β¦ The area on which the adhesive bead is applied is not preβ
coated or primed.
β¦ The relevant area is a ceramic coating.
β¦ No windows are precoated.
β¦ The sealing lip is included with a new windscreen.
β Clean a 20 mm-wide strip all around the edge of the window
with the cleaning solution - D 009 401 04- .
β Then rub edge of window dry using a lint-free cloth.
β Using applicator - D 009 500 25- -1-, apply glass and paint
primer -2- evenly in one pass.
β¦ Allow to air dry for approx. 10 minutes.

Note
The distance between glass/paint primer as well as adhesive bead and the outer edge of the windscreen differs
in the lower area of the windscreen.
β Up to -dimension a- = 150 mm measured from lower edge of
windscreen the distance between the adhesive bead and the
outer edge is -dimension b- = 6 mm.
β From this point down to the bend the distance amounts to
-dimension d- = 20 mm.
β At half distance between dimension a and the bend
-dimension c- must be 10 mm.

Preparing body flange for fitting
β¦ Cut back residual adhesive sealant to 1 to 2 m shortly before
bonding window back in.
β¦ Do not damage primer and paintwork structure when doing
this.

β¦ Keep bonding surface free of dirt and grease.
β¦ Do not treat bonding surface with activator, glass/paint primer
or cleaning solution immediately after cutting back.
β¦ The remaining material is required as a base for better adheβ
sion of the new adhesive sealing material to be applied.
β Cut back remaining material on body flange with U-shaped
blade - V.A.G 1561/3- , but do not remove completely.
β’
Exception: if bonding is performed later than one day after
cutting back adhesive bead, the remaining residual material
must be activated with activator .
β Apply activator evenly in one stroke using applicator .
NOTICE
Risk of damage to paintwork from activator.
β Apply activator neatly onto adhesive bead, do not spill.
β¦ If the window flange has been repaired or partially renewed,
the area concerned must be cleaned and primed again after
painting.
β Clean metal flange all around using cleaning solution .
β Then rub edge of window dry using a lint-free cloth.
β Apply glass/paint primer evenly in one pass onto paintwork
structure using applicator .
Note
It is possible that a laser weld seam lies outside the area of the
adhesive bead. In this case, the exposed weld seam must be
sealed with glass adhesive before bonding the window.
β If laser weld seam -3- on metal flange -4- is not covered by
existing adhesive bead -1-, coat laser weld seam -3- with
glass/paint primer -3-. Then fill laser weld seam with glass adβ
hesive -1-.
Touching up paint damage
Paint structure must be restored after damage to the paintwork
according to specifications in the βPaintβ workshop manual.
1.7
Cleaning off excess adhesive
β Use adhesive remover - D 002 000. 10- as cleaning agent.
Safety precautions must be observe for all work procedures.

Note
β¦ When cleaning the vehicle interior, do not press freshly instalβ
led window outwards.
β¦ Otherwise, the window will be detached.
β First, clean the painted surface roughly with a dry cloth. Reβ
move residue using adhesive remover - D 002 000. 10- .
β Cleaning plastic trim: Allow adhesive sealant to cure (approx.
1 hour) and then peel off.
