Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Observe the following:
Assembly sequence:
– Align air intake grille on metal collar.
– Hold air intake grille and screw on outer nut half-way onto wel‐
ded stud.
– Screw on nut on opposite side.
– Tighten outer nut.
– Tighten centre nut.
Note
♦ The seal -2- must be properly seated on the air intake grille.
♦ Water may enter the fresh air intake if the grille is damaged or
not properly fitted. This may result in complaints about odours
from the air conditioning system and/or about moisture in the

– Remove cover -1-.
Note
♦ Water could enter the fresh air intake if the cover for fresh air
intake is damaged or not properly fitted. This may result in
complaints about odours from the air conditioning system and/
or about moisture in the vehicle.
♦ If the plenum chamber cover is damaged or not properly fitted,
water may likewise enter the fresh air intake via the cover for
fresh air intake.

Checking forced ventilation for passen‐
ger compartment
Note
♦ The stale air escapes via ventilation outlets in the luggage
compartment trim.
♦ The ventilation openings must not be covered if the ventilation
is to function properly.
♦ The ventilation frames are located in the rear side panels be‐
hind the bumper.
The ventilation can be checked through the luggage compart‐
ment.
Additional units may have to be removed.

Overview of operating and display unit,
Climatronic
Note
♦ A warning lamp in the instrument panel controls will indicate
that the selected function is active. In addition, the display of
the radio or of the radio navigation system will indicate the
selected function for a short time when a button is pressed or
a regulator is operated.
♦ You can switch between °C and °F in the radio or radio navi‐
gation system display via the main menu in the dash panel
insert. Press rocker switch in windscreen wiper lever (or in
multifunction steering wheel) to call up main menu. Then, se‐
lect Settings, Units and Temperature.
♦ If new heater and air conditioning controls - EX21- with Cli‐
matronic control unit - J255- are installed, the basic setting and
an adaptation (“Compressor first run”) must be carried out in
Guided Fault Finding or in Guided Functions.
♦ If the indicator lamp does not light up after the A/C button is
pressed, a fault may be stored in the control unit. Read the
event memory using the ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester. If the
event entry “Compressor first run not performed” is stored, an
adaption (“Compressor first run”) must be carried out in the
"Guided Fault Finding".
♦ Pressing the AUTO button will cancel all settings which deviate
from automatic mode.
♦ Deviations from automatic mode ⇒ respective operating in‐
