Removing  
Note  
♦ The bonnet with triggered active hinges can be reset in closed  
β‡’ page 31 and opened β‡’ page 32 condition.  
♦ When the bonnet is opened with triggered hinges, there won't  
be any damage to surrounding components.

Triggered active hinges have been reset to start position.  
– Remove spray jets -4- β‡’ Electrical system; Rep. gr. 92 ; Win‐  
dow washer system; Removing and installing spray jets .  
– Pull line -2- out of opening in bonnet -1-.  
– Loosen hexagon nuts -5- on left and right of hinge -3- (do not  
unscrew completely).  
Further dismantling requires the assistance of a second mechan‐  
ic.  
– Remove gas strut β‡’ page 53 .

– Now, and only now, unscrew and remove hexagon nuts -5-  
and lift bonnet -1- out of hinges -3-.  
Installing  
Installation of bonnet -1- is carried out accordingly in reverse or‐  
der of removal.  
Note  
Install the line -2- in a curve. If line is installed twisted it will kink.

Note  
♦ Triggered hinges -2- can be identified by the bonnet being  
raised at the rear. There is also a gap at the wings.  
♦ The following measures must always be performed at the  
same time on both sides.  
– Protect surrounding parts against damage.  
– Fit screwdriver -3- on left and right to locking pawl -arrow a-.

– Release locking pawl -4- on hinge -2- -arrow b-.  
– Carefully press down bonnet -1- -arrows a- so that locking  
pawl -4- can no longer engage.  
– Only then release locking pawl, and pull out screwdriver.  
– Carefully push down bonnet further -arrows a- until arrester  
engages on shoulder.  
Once the hinges have been returned to the default position on a  
vehicle with triggered pedestrian protection system, the following  
components must be replaced:  
♦ Trigger 1 for pedestrian protection - G598-  
♦ Trigger 2 for pedestrian protection - G599-  
– For additional information and work instructions for the pe‐  
destrian protection system, refer to β‡’ General body repairs,  
interior; Rep. gr. 69 ; Pedestrian protection system .

Resetting opened bonnet with triggered  
active hinges for pedestrian protection  
system  
Note  
♦ Triggered hinges -2- can be identified by the bonnet being  
raised at the rear. There is also a gap at the wings.

Adjusting bonnet  
Special tools and workshop equipment required  
♦ Torque wrench - V.A.G 1331-  
Note  
♦ Vehicle must be standing on its wheels to enable bonnet to be adjusted.  
♦ The adjusting buffers -2- on the left and right are not a means of adjustment. They have the function of  
stabilising and damping the bonnet.  
♦ The bonnet is correctly adjusted when all shut lines are even when closed. The bonnet must not protrude  
too far inwards or outwards. The contours must also be flush with each other.

♦ The bonnet must engage into the lid lock without excessive force.

– Remove striker pin -1- β‡’ page 46 .  
– Adjustment buffers -2- can be used to adjust height of front  
part of bonnet relative to wings β‡’ page 36 .  
– The gaps/shut lines are adjusted via the hinges β‡’ page 35 .  
– After bonnet has been adjusted, the striker pin -1- can be re-  
installed and adjusted β‡’ page 37 .

be seen.

– Removing plenum chamber cover β‡’ page 20 .  
– By loosening hexagon nuts -4- on left and right bonnet hinges  
-1-, the bonnet can be centred laterally -arrow c- and in longi‐  
tudinal direction -arrow b- between wings.  
– By loosening bolts -2- on left and right bonnet hinges -1-, bon‐  
net can be centred longitudinally -arrow b- and in height  
-arrow a- between wings.  
– Ensure that gaps are uniform: β‡’ Body Repairs; Rep. gr. 00 ;  
Body panel gaps/shut lines; Body - front .  
– After adjusting, carry out corrosion protection measures on  
bonnet hinges -1-, hexagon nuts -5- and bolts -2-.  
– If necessary, readjust adjustment buffers.

– Open bonnet.  
– Remove Bowden cable on mounting bracket β‡’ page 54 .  
– Disconnect connector for bonnet contact switch.  
Note  
♦ The connector is secured next to the right headlight.  
♦ Bolt -3- is self-locking and must be renewed after each time it has been loosened.  
– Remove bolts -3- from lock carrier and remove lid lock -1- up‐  
wards -arrow a-.  
– Unclip retainer -5- from bonnet lock.  
– Slightly remove retainer -5- from bonnet lock -1- -arrow b- and  
unhook cable -4- -arrow c-.  
– Remove microswitch -6- from bonnet lock.
