compartment on the positive battery terminal.

The fuse holder D - SD- and the positive battery terminal clamp  
are integrated in the main fuse carrier.

Removing  
– With ignition switched off, disconnect earth cable from battery

– Remove engine control unit, and lay it to one side with con‐  
nectors attached ⇒ Rep. gr. 23 ; Engine control unit; Remov‐  
ing and installing engine control unit - J623- or ⇒ Rep. gr. 24 ;

– Press release buttons -arrows-.  
– Remove cover -1-.

– Using screwdriver, release retaining tab -2-.  
– Pull off cover -1- in direction of -arrow-.  
– Cut through cable tie (bottom) on wiring harness.  
– Release fasteners -1, 2, 4- -arrow-.  
– Remove fuse holder B -3-, and lay it to one side.  
– Remove nuts -arrows-  
– Remove bracket for engine control unit -1-.  
– Release retaining tab -3-.  
– Detach electronics box in engine compartment -2- from studs.  
– Lift out engine compartment electronics box -2-.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal.

Removing  
– With ignition switched off, disconnect earth cable from battery

– Press release buttons -arrow-.  
– Remove cover -1-.  
– Using screwdriver, release retaining tab -2-.  
– Pull off front cover -1- in direction of -arrow-.

– Mark allocation of electrical wiring at threaded connections for  
reinstallation.  
– Unscrew nuts -1, 2, 4, 5, 6-.  
– Unscrew bolt -3-.  
– Lay aside electrical wiring -arrow-.  
– Cut through cable tie (bottom) on wiring harness.  
– Release fasteners -1, 2, 4- -arrow-.  
– Remove fuse holder B -3-, and lay it to one side.  
Installing  
Install in the reverse order of removal, observing the following:  
– Fit and secure electrical wiring to fuse holder A according to  
markings made earlier.

Removing  
– With ignition switched off, disconnect earth cable from battery

– Remove dash panel ⇒ General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.

– Release retaining tab -2- and -4- in direction of -arrows A-.  
– Pull out fuse holder C - SC- -3- from bracket -1- in direction of  
-arrow B-.  
– Disconnect electrical wiring.  
Note

finding and Fitting locations.  
Take photographs of the assignment, if necessary.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal.

Note  
The exact assignment should be gleaned from the latest current flow diagram ⇒ Current flow diagrams,  
Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.  
Take photographs of the assignment, if necessary.  
– Press locking element -5- on both sides and pull it in direction  
of -arrow C-.  
– Separate electrical connector -4- in direction of -arrow C-.  
– Release retaining tab -1- in direction of -arrow A-.  
– Release retaining tab -2- in direction of -arrow B-.  
– Release retaining tab -3- in direction of -arrow C-.  
– Pull out fuse holder C - SC- backwards from bracket in direc‐  
tion of -arrow D-.  
– Disconnect electrical wiring.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal.

Removing and installing main fuse car‐  
rier  
Special tools and workshop equipment required  
♦ Torque wrench - V.A.G 1410-  
♦ Torque screwdriver - VAS 6494-  
The main fuse carrier is located in the rear centre of the luggage  
compartment on the positive battery terminal.  
The fuse holder D - SD- and the positive battery terminal clamp  
are integrated in the main fuse carrier.  
Removing  
– With ignition switched off, disconnect earth cable from battery  
⇒ page 16 .  
– Loosen nut -1- of battery clamp on positive battery terminal by  
several turns.  
– Release retaining spring -3-, and open cover -2- of main fuse  
carrier -arrow-.

– Unbolt wires -1, 5, 6, 7, 8-.  
– Remove battery isolation igniter - N253- -9- ⇒ General body  
repairs, interior; Rep. gr. 69 ; Battery isolation igniter; Remov‐  
ing and installing battery isolation igniter .  
– Pull battery clamp with main fuse carrier -4- off positive battery  
terminal, and remove it.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal.
