♦ Locking pin - T40011- or  
♦ suitable welding wire  
Removing  
– Remove lower steering column trim β‡’ General body repairs,  
interior; Rep. gr. 68 ; Compartments and covers; Removing  
and installing lower steering column trim .  
Note  
♦ To remove the lock cylinder, it might be necessary to fold aside  
the ignition key.  
♦ For reasons of clarity, the ignition lock is illustrated in the cor‐  
rect position without the ignition key.  
– Turn ignition key to β€œIgnition ON” position. This will align the  
recess in trim -arrow- with hole in ignition lock.

– Fold aside ignition key as far as possible.  
– Insert locking pin - T40011- or suitable welding wire to stop  
into hole -2-.  
– Pull lock cylinder -1- out of steering lock housing.  
WARNING  
Risk of seized steering lock.  
♦ The steering lock must not be actuated without lock cylin‐  
der.  
Note  
♦ A seized steering lock must be renewed.  
♦ The reader coil is integrated in the lock cylinder and cannot be  
renewed individually.  
♦ The entire lock cylinder must be renewed if the reader coil is  
defective.  
♦ A new lock cylinder can be ordered from the responsible dis‐  
tribution centre or the importer. When ordering, the vehicle-  
specific locking number according to the VIN must be  
provided.  
– Release and disconnect connector on reader coil.  
Installing  
Install in the reverse order of removal, observing the following:  
– Insert ignition key into lock cylinder and turn it to position β€œIg‐  
nition On”.  
– Again, insert locking pin - T40011- or suitable welding wire to  
stop into hole at front edge.  
– Connect electrical connector to immobiliser reader coil.  
– Press lock cylinder -1- together with reader coil into steering  
lock housing -3-.  
– Remove locking pin - T40011- from hole -2-.  
– Press in lock cylinder tightly until locking mechanism can be  
heard to engage.

– Release retaining clip -arrow A-, and pull ignition key with‐  
drawal lock solenoid - N376- -2- off steering lock housing -1-  
-arrow B-.  
– The electrical connection will be disconnected automatically.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal.  
8.4  
Removing and installing ignition/starter  
switch  
Removing  
– Remove lower steering column trim β‡’ General body repairs,  
interior; Rep. gr. 68 ; Compartments and covers; Removing  
and installing lower steering column trim .  
– Release and disconnect electrical connector -1-.  
– Insert jeweller screwdrivers into recesses -arrows- in steering  
lock housing -4- to release retaining clips -2 and 3-.  
If this procedure cannot be applied due to lack of space, make an  
auxiliary tool consisting of 2 wire hooks by carrying out the steps  
below.  
– Bend one end of welding wire (1 mm in diameter) to form a  
loop.  
– Cut welding wire to length -a-.  
♦ Dimension -a- = approx. 50 mm.  
– File off the wire at the tip of the loop to form a pointed hook.  
♦ Dimension -b- = 5 mm.

– Pull ignition/starter switch - D- -5- out of steering lock housing  
while ensuring that jeweller screwdriver or wire hooks remain  
inserted.  
Installing  
Install in the reverse order of removal, observing the following:  
– Insert ignition/starter switch - D- into steering lock housing until  
it can be heard to engage.

Removing and installing steering col‐

Removing  
– Align front wheels to straight-ahead position – steering wheel  
in zero position.  
– Move steering wheel to rearmost and lowest position. Use the  
full range of the steering column adjustment for this purpose.  
– Remove steering wheel β‡’ Running gear, axles, steering; Rep.  
gr. 48 ; Steering wheel; Removing and installing steering  
wheel .  
– Remove lower steering column trim β‡’ General body repairs,  
interior; Rep. gr. 68 ; Compartments and covers; Removing  
and installing lower steering column trim .  
WARNING  
Risk of damage to the electronic components due to electro‐  
static discharge.  
♦ Before disconnecting the electrical connector, the me‐  
chanic must electrostatically discharge himself or herself  
by briefly grasping hold of door striker plate or similar.  
Note  
The number of connectors on the steering column electronics control unit - J527- may vary depending on the  
vehicle equipment.

– Pull out connector lock in direction of arrow -A- and press it  
down.  
– Disconnect electrical connector -1-.  
– Pull out connector lock in direction of arrow -B- and press it  
down.  
– Disconnect electrical connector -2-.  
– Press connector lock in direction of arrow -C- and disconnect  
electrical connector -3-.

– Press release on both sides -1- in direction of arrow -A-.  
– Pull off steering column switch module -2- slightly.  
– Press retaining tab -3- in direction of arrow -B-.  
– Pull off steering column switch module -2-.  
Installing  
Install in the reverse order of removal, observing the following:  
– Ensure that switch module of steering column is engaged cor‐  
rectly.  
– If a new steering column electronics control unit - J527- is in‐  
stalled, do not remove transport protection until steering wheel  
is mounted.

♦ Torque screwdriver - V.A.G 1624-  
Note  
♦ Airbag coil connector and return ring with slip ring - J527- is  
integrated in steering column electronics control unit - F138- .  
♦ If the control unit is renewed, perform the adaptation routines  
using β‡’ Vehicle diagnostic tester.  
Removing  
– Align front wheels to straight-ahead position – steering wheel  
in zero position.  
– Move steering wheel to rearmost and lowest position. Use the  
full range of the steering column adjustment for this purpose.  
– Remove steering wheel β‡’ Running gear, axles, steering; Rep.  
gr. 48 ; Steering wheel; Removing and installing steering  
wheel .  
– Remove lower steering column trim β‡’ General body repairs,  
interior; Rep. gr. 68 ; Compartments and covers; Removing  
and installing lower steering column trim .  
WARNING  
Risk of damage to the electronic components due to electro‐

– Press connector lock in direction of arrow -A- and disconnect  
electrical connector -1-.  
– Press connector lock in direction of arrow -B- and disconnect  
electrical connector -2-.  
– Press connector lock in direction of arrow -C- and disconnect  
electrical connector -3-.  
– Pull out connector lock in direction of arrow -D- and press it  
down.  
– Disconnect electrical connector -4-.  
– Press connector lock in direction of arrow -E- and disconnect  
electrical connector -5-.  
– Pull out connector lock in direction of arrow -F- and press it  
down.  
– Disconnect electrical connector -6-.

– Unscrew bolts -1-.  
– Remove steering column electronics control unit - J527- -2-  
from steering column combination switch - E595- .  
Installing  
Install in the reverse order of removal, observing the following:  
– If a new steering column electronics control unit - J527- is in‐  
stalled, do not remove transport protection until steering wheel  
is mounted.
