Removing

– Remove moulded headliner ⇒ page 248 .
– Disconnect battery earth cable with ignition switched on ⇒
Electrical system; Rep. gr. 27 ; Battery; Connecting and dis‐
connecting battery .

– Thread tether -3- out of rectangular aperture in A-pillar.
– Unclip clips -1- and -2-.
– Detach retaining clips -1- to -6- in retaining tabs for curtain
airbag from body.
– To do this, carefully push »tip« -arrow- of release tool - VAS
1978/17- -7- in a straight line into recess -A- as far as stop, as
shown in illustration.
– Pull left side of retaining clip out of body.
– Pull out release tool - VAS 1978/17- -7- ensuring that released
side of retaining clip does not engage again.
– Turn release tool - VAS 1978/17- -7- by 180°.
– Repeat procedure on recess -B-.

WARNING
Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. separating the
electrical connector), the person handling them must ensure
that he/she is “electrically discharged”. To do this briefly touch,
for example, the door striker plate.

– Pull out connector lock -2-, and pull off electrical connector
-1- for curtain airbag -4- -arrow-.
– Unscrew bolt -3- on curtain airbag.
– First, detach curtain airbag -4- at front from mounting on body,
and push it towards rear.
– Then, detach curtain airbag at rear from body mounting, and
remove it.
Installing

♦ Always follow steps of procedure for installing curtain air‐
bag in the given order.
♦ Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. connecting
the electrical connector), the person handling them must
ensure that he/she is “electrically discharged”. To do this
briefly touch, for example, the door striker plate.

– First, attach curtain airbag -4- to body mounting at rear, and
push it towards front.
– Then, attach curtain airbag to body mounting at front.
– Secure curtain airbag using bolt -3-.
– Clip in retaining clips for curtain airbag ensuring they engage
audibly. Start at gas generator and continue towards front and

rear.
– Pull on retaining clips to ensure they are properly engaged.
– Fit connector -1- onto igniter for curtain airbag.
– Press in connector lock -2-. Doing so, the connector will be
fully inserted into curtain airbag igniter and locked at the same
time.
– Ensure that the line to prevent twisting is visible over the entire
length and that it is straight. This will ensure that the curtain
airbag is NOT twisted.
Continue installation in reverse order of removal.
WARNING
Battery must be connected with ignition switched on. If pyro‐
technic components (e.g. airbag, seat belt tensioners) are
repaired incorrectly, they may be accidentally triggered after
the battery is connected. Ensure that nobody is in vehicle when
connecting battery.
– Connect battery earth cable with ignition switched on ⇒ Elec‐
trical system; Rep. gr. 27 ; Battery; Connecting and discon‐
necting battery .
WARNING
If the ignition has not yet been switched on after the battery has
been reconnected “warning lamps in dash panel insert are off”,
the ignition (key or button) must only be switched on while sit‐
ting on the driver seat and with the seat set to rearmost
position.
Note
If airbag warning lamp - K75- indicates a fault following installa‐
tion, event memory must be read, deleted and read again ⇒ Ve‐
hicle diagnostic tester.
