– Disconnect battery earth cable with ignition switched on ⇒
Electrical system; Rep. gr. 27 ; Battery; Connecting and dis‐
connecting battery .
– Release locking lever of steering wheel positioner.
– Pull out steering wheel completely, push it upwards, and fix it
in place.
– Unscrew 3 bolts -2- for steering column through opening in
dash panel.
– Remove driver side knee airbag -1- towards rear.
WARNING
Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. separating the
electrical connector), the person handling them must ensure
that he/she is “electrically discharged”. To do this briefly touch,
for example, the door striker plate.
– Disconnect connector -3- on driver side knee airbag igniter -
N295- .
– To do this, release connector lock -4- using a small screw‐
driver -arrow- and pull off connector.
WARNING
Place airbag aside in such a way that the impact padding points
upwards.

Installing
WARNING
♦ Observe safety instructions for pyrotechnic components
⇒ page 3 .
♦ Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. connecting
the electrical connector), the person handling them must
ensure that he/she is “electrically discharged”. To do this
briefly touch, for example, the door striker plate.
♦ Note allocation of airbags to dash panel ⇒ Electronic parts
catalogue .

– Connect connector -1- to airbag igniter -arrow A-.
– Press in connector lock -2- -arrow B-. Doing so, the connector
will be fully inserted into airbag igniter and locked at the same
time.
Continue installation in reverse order of removal observing the
following:
Note
♦ Ensure that the electrical connectors are pushed fully onto
stop and engage audibly.
♦ Ensure that no wires are trapped.
Caution
Any risk of damage to the knee airbag surface due to mechan‐
ical stress must be eliminated.
♦ After completion of the repair work perform a visual check
to ensure that the knee airbag surface is not damaged.
WARNING
Battery must be connected with ignition switched on. If pyro‐
technic components (e.g. airbag, seat belt tensioners) are
repaired incorrectly, they may be accidentally triggered after
the battery is connected. Ensure that nobody is in vehicle when
connecting battery.
– Connect battery earth cable with ignition switched on ⇒ Elec‐
trical system; Rep. gr. 27 ; Battery; Connecting and discon‐
necting battery .
WARNING
If the ignition has not yet been switched on after the battery has
been reconnected “warning lamps in dash panel insert are off”,
the ignition (key or button) must only be switched on while sit‐
ting on the driver seat and with the seat set to rearmost
position.

Note
If airbag warning lamp - K75- indicates a fault following installa‐
tion, event memory must be read, deleted and then read again
