Removing
Vehicles with sunroof
– Open sliding sunroof completely.

Open sun blind at about / .

– Clean removal lever - 80 - 200- to prevent the moulded head‐
liner from getting soiled.
– Run removal lever - 80 - 200- between trim frame -2- and
moulded headliner -1- until you feel one of the retaining clips
-3-.
– Unclip -arrow- trim frame -2- all round in area of retaining clips
-3- using removal lever - 80 - 200- .
Continued for all vehicles
– Unclip upper A-pillar trims in area of overlap to moulded head‐
liner ⇒ page 212 .
– Remove upper B-pillar trims ⇒ page 220 .
– Remove C-pillar trims ⇒ page 224 .

– If present, unscrew bolt -2- in frame -1- of 4 load guard eyelets
respectively but do not remove frame.
– Fold down rear seat backrests.
– Move front backrest to 45°-position.
– Disconnect connector for moulded headliner wiring harness in
retaining frame for moulded headliner.
Caution
♦ The moulded headliner is easily kinked.
♦ If kinked, the headliner must be renewed.
Note
When carrying out the steps below, ensure that release pliers -
VAS 6427- are positioned centrally in retaining clips.
– Using release pliers - VAS 6427- , release retaining clips -2-
in retaining frame for moulded headliner -1- from body mount‐
ings.
– Hold moulded headliner -1- in such a way -arrows- that re‐
leased retaining clips -2- do not engage again.

– With aid of a second mechanic, hold moulded headliner -1- in
position, and release retaining clips -2- in rear area from body
using removal lever - 80 - 200- .
– With the aid of a second mechanic, carefully remove moulded

headliner -1- from vehicle through rear lid aperture.
Installing
Cutting new cut-outs into a new moulded headliner
On vehicles with illuminated vanity mirrors and/or rain and light
sensor - G397- the respective cut-outs must be cut into a new
moulded headliner.
– Cut the required cut-outs into the new moulded headliner us‐
ing a cutter knife. The moulded headliner is provided with the
respective markings.
Continue installation in reverse order of removal observing the
following:
Note
♦ Before installing, check all fasteners for damage and renew if
necessary.
♦ Always renew retaining clips for trim frame (qty. 15) before
installation.

Removing
– Remove moulded headliner ⇒ page 248 .
– Cut roof reinforcements -1- and -2- into approx. 6 cm wide
strips -3- -dot-dash lines-, using a cutter knife.
– Pull off strips -3- from roof.
– Trim back adhesive residues with electric cutter - V.A.G
1561A- and scraper - V.A.G 1561/20- .
Note
If the paint structure has been damaged on removal of roof rein‐
forcements, repair paint damage according to guidelines of ⇒
Paint workshop manual .
Installing
Note
Observe adhesive processing instructions when installing the roof
reinforcement.
– Measure the width of the two roof reinforcements, and mark
centre on each roof reinforcement from both sides.
– Use hand-cartridge gun - V.A.G 1628- to apply single-compo‐
nent assembly adhesive (⇒ Electronic parts catalogue ) to roof
reinforcements. Observe the following dimensions while doing
so.

♦ Dimension -a- = 17 mm
♦ Dimension -b- = 55 mm
♦ Dimension -c- = 14 mm
♦ Dimension -d- = 95 mm
– Guide roof reinforcement -1- into vehicle.
– Position roof reinforcement -1- according to dimension -a-
centrally on roof, and press it on across entire surface.
Dimension -a-: 33 ± 3 mm from front sheet-metal edge
– Guide roof reinforcement -2- into vehicle.
– Position roof reinforcement -2- according to dimension -b-
centrally on roof; and press it on across entire surface.
Dimension -b-: 29 ± 3 mm from rear sheet-metal edge
