5.2
Removing and installing airbag unit with
igniter
WARNING
♦ Observe general safety regulations when working on air‐
bag, belt tensioner and battery isolator units (pyrotechnic
components).
♦ Observe special instructions for driver and front passen‐
ger airbags.
– Switch on ignition.
– Disconnect vehicle battery ⇒ Electrical system; Rep. gr. 27 ;
Battery; Disconnecting and reconnecting battery .
– Set steering wheel height to lowest position.
– Extend steering wheel as far as possible into passenger com‐
partment.
•
Steering wheel position: “straight ahead”
– Turn steering wheel by approx. 100° towards right.

– Make sure that the round closed recess -3- in the base of the
steering wheel -2- is in the highest position above steering
column trim -1-.
Note
The closed recess in the base of the steering wheel is one of two
breaking points for removing the driver side airbag.
For the steps below, a commercially available pin punch with a
shaft diameter of 5 or 6 mm is required.
– Mask off the end of the pin punch handle with commercially
available adhesive tape to prevent the dash panel insert and
steering column switch trim from being scratched.
– Position pin punch parallel to steering column axis, and pierce
breaking point at base of steering wheel.
– Insert pin punch into base of steering wheel as far as stop, and
pull it back by 1 to 2 mm.

The tip of the pin punch -2- is now inside the coil of spring
-3-.
Caution
Never push the pin punch downwards. Risk of damage.
– Pull pin punch -2- upwards “with slight force”.
– This will move the coil of spring -3- towards the centre of the
steering wheel -arrow A-.
– At the same time, the right arm of the spring moveslkoutwards
-arrow B-.
As a result, the driver airbag -1- is released from the catch on the
left side of the steering wheel.

– Turn steering wheel back to “straight ahead” position.
– Turn steering wheel by approx. 100° towards left.
– Make sure that the round closed recess -3- in the base of the
steering wheel -2- is in the highest position above steering
column trim -1-.
– Use pin punch to pierce breaking point as described, and in‐
sert it into base of steering wheel as far as stop.
– Pull pin punch back by 1 to 2 mm

– Lightly press with one hand on the horn symbol on the side of
the steering wheel which has already been released.
This is necessary to prevent the airbag from being jammed in the
steering wheel.
– Pull pin punch -2- upwards “with slight force”.
– This will move the coil of spring -3- towards the centre of the
steering wheel -arrow A-.
– At the same time, the outer arms of the spring move outwards
-arrows B-.
This releases the driver airbag -1- from the catches in the steering
wheel.
– Turn steering wheel back to “straight ahead” position.
– Remove airbag unit from steering wheel.

WARNING
Electrostatic discharges may result in unintentional triggering
of airbag. Therefore, the mechanic must electrostatically dis‐
charge him/herself before disconnecting the igniter and earth
wires. This can be done by briefly touching the body or striker
plate of the door.
– Release connector lock -3- in -direction of arrow-, and pull off
airbag connector -2-.
– On vehicles with multifunction steering wheel, pull off connec‐
tor -1- in -direction of arrow-.
Installing
– On vehicles with multifunction steering wheel, push connector
to plug-in connector.
– Connect airbag connector to plug-in connector, and press in
connector lock.
The airbag connector must audibly engage.
– Press airbag unit into steering wheel.

– Ensure that airbag unit is properly engaged in steering wheel.
– Connect battery earth cable with ignition switched on ⇒ Elec‐
trical system; Rep. gr. 27 ; Battery; Connecting and discon‐
necting battery .
WARNING
If the ignition has not yet been switched on after the battery has
been reconnected “warning lamps in dash panel insert are off”,
the ignition (key or button) must only be switched on while sit‐
ting on the driver seat and with the seat set to rearmost
position.
– Finally, read and clear event memory of airbag control unit
since faults may be stored as a result of disconnecting elec‐
trical connectors ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.
5.3
Renewing connector on airbag

♦ Illustration shows steering wheel with multifunction.

– Release connector lock -2- using a small screwdriver -arrow-
and pull connector -1- off driver side airbag igniter - N95- .

– Disconnect connectors from wiring harness -1-.
– Detach wiring harness from retainers and remove it from driver
side airbag -2-.
Installing
WARNING
♦ Observe safety instructions for pyrotechnic components
⇒ page 3 .
♦ Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. connecting
the electrical connector), the person handling them must
ensure that he/she is “electrically discharged”. To do this
briefly touch, for example, the door striker plate.
– Connect connector -1- to airbag igniter -arrow A-.
– Press in connector lock -2- -arrow B-. Doing so, the connector
will be fully inserted into airbag igniter and locked at the same
time.
Continue installation in reverse order of removal observing the
following:
Note
♦ Ensure that the electrical connectors are pushed fully onto
stop and engage audibly.
♦ Ensure correct routing of wiring harness in retainers.
