Assembly overview - balance shaft
Note
♦ After working on the chain drive, adapt learnt values in en‐
gine control unit. To do this, switch on ignition, and select
the following menu options on vehicle diagnostic tester:
♦ 0001 - Engine electronics, functions
♦ 0001 - Basic setting
♦ Timing chain length compensator, reset after re-
newing chain

Needle bearing must be renewed after each removal. Install
new needle bearing with same colour code.
Removing
– Remove toothed belt for coolant pump ⇒ page 322 .
– Remove timing chain cover (top) ⇒ page 159 .
– Remove lower timing chain cover ⇒ page 162 .
– Remove camshaft timing chain and drive chain for balance
shafts ⇒ page 171 .
– Unscrew bolt -2-.

– Detach drive sprocket -1- for toothed belt for coolant pump.
– Remove intermediate shaft sprocket -1-.
– Unscrew bolt -2- for balance shaft on inlet side and pull out
balance shaft.
Installing
– Lubricate bearing points of balance shaft -arrows- with en‐
gine oil.
– Install balance shaft for inlet side and tighten bolt -2-.

– Renew O-ring -1- and lubricate with engine oil.
– Lubricate bearing mounting with engine oil and install; dowel
pin -arrow- for bearing mounting must engage in bore in
cylinder block.
Note
♦ The idler gear must always be renewed. Otherwise no tooth
backlash is set, engine damage.
♦ The new idler gear is coated with a solid film lubricant that
wears off after a short period and thus automatically sets the
tooth backlash.
– Mark faces of gear teeth of idler gear with paint -arrow-.
– Insert idler gear; marking on balance shaft must be posi‐
tioned between markings on faces of gear teeth.
– Tighten bolt -1- for idler gear; tightening sequence ⇒ page
189 .

Further assembly is basically a reverse of the dismantling se‐
quence. During this procedure, observe the following:
– Install drive chain for balance shafts and camshaft timing
chain ⇒ page 171 .
– Install timing chain cover (bottom) ⇒ page 162 .
– Install upper timing chain cover ⇒ page 159 .
– Renew oil seal for balance shaft on inlet side ⇒ page 128 .

Installing
– Check installation position of tube for balance shaft. The
apertures -arrow- must face towards chain side.
– Lubricate bearing points of balance shaft -arrows- with en‐
gine oil.
– Install balance shaft for exhaust side.
– Before tightening bolt -1-, check that balance shaft rests flat
against crankcase.

Note
If the balancer shaft does not rest flat, the pipe for balancer
shaft must be inserted again.
Further assembly is basically a reverse of the dismantling se‐
quence. During this procedure, observe the following:

– Lever out oil seal -arrow A-.
– Clean contact surface and sealing surface.
– Lubricate sealing surface of balance shaft -2- with gear oil.
– Fit oil seal -1- onto balance shaft.

The marking “Luftseite” (or “Outside”) -arrow- should be legi‐
ble from the outside.
Note
The drive sprocket bolt has a left-hand thread.
– Apply thrust piece -T10353/1- to oil seal -1- and press into
cylinder block as far as stop using bolt -2- (take care not to
tilt oil seal).
– Fit toothed belt for coolant pump ⇒ page 322 .
– Add coolant ⇒ page 282 .
