Note
The drive sprocket bolt has a left-hand thread.
– Loosen bolt on drive sprocket -1- for coolant pump using
torque wrench -V.A.G 1410- and insert tool -T10360-, and
unscrew it by 3 turns. To do this, counter hold at vibration
damper.
Note
If tool cannot be used on account of starter securing bolt (on
vehicles with manual gearbox), unscrew respective securing
bolt by approx. 15 mm.
– Remove toothed belt -2-.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order. When installing,
note the following:
– Renew bolt for drive sprocket.
– Installation position of drive gear: Collar on drive gear faces
gearbox.
– Fit toothed belt and tighten securing bolt.
– Add coolant ⇒ page 282 .

The cooling system could be under pressure. Hot steam/hot
coolant can escape - risk of scalding.
Skin and other parts of the body may be scalded.

– Check whether the two centring pins are fitted in the cylinder
block; install if necessary.
– Fit connecting piece -2- into engine oil cooler -1-.
– Push actuator for engine temperature regulation -N493- -3-
onto connecting piece and centring pins in cylinder block.
Note
Check correct seating of connection. If connection is »tilted« it
may leak.
– Tighten bolts for actuator for engine temperature regulation
-N493- ⇒ page 317 .
– Install coolant pump ⇒ page 324 .
Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of remov‐
al; note the following:
– Check cooling system for leaks after all coolant hoses have
been connected ⇒ page 287 .
– Add coolant ⇒ page 282 .
– Perform adaption of actuator for engine temperature regula‐
tion -N493-. Proceed as follows to do this:
– Connect ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester, and select following
functions.
♦ 0001 - Engine electronics
♦ 0001 - Basic setting
♦ Actuator for engine temperature regulation N493

Removing and installing coolant tem‐
perature sender -G62-
Removing
•
Engine cold.
– Briefly open cap -arrow- of coolant expansion tank to reduce
residual pressure in cooling system, and then tighten cap
again until it engages.
– Remove air filter housing ⇒ page 443 .
– Release hose clip -2-.
– Remove bolt -1- and press air pipe (left-side) towards left
slightly.
– Disconnect electrical connector -1-.

Note
♦ Cover the openings in the gearbox with a cloth to prevent
any coolant from getting into the clutch housing.
♦ Insert new coolant temperature sender -G62- immediately
into connection to avoid loss of coolant.
– Remove bolt -2- and detach coolant temperature sender
-G62- -item 3-.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:

Renew O-rings.

Removing
•
Engine cold.

– Disconnect electrical connector -1-.
– Pull out retaining clip -2-, and pull off radiator outlet coolant
temperature sender -G83-.
Note
♦ Use a cloth to catch the escaping coolant.
♦ Insert new coolant temperature sender at radiator outlet -
G83- into connection immediately to avoid loss of coolant.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
