Note  
♦ Renew seals and self-locking nuts after they have been re‐  
moved.  
♦ After working on the exhaust system, ensure that the system  
is not under stress and that there is sufficient clearance to  
the bodywork. If necessary, loosen clamp and align silencers  
and exhaust pipe so that sufficient clearance is maintained  
to the bodywork at all points and the mountings are evenly  
loaded.

Note

CAUTION  
Risk of accident caused by high weight of silencers.  
– Seek help from a second a mechanic for the following  
work.  
– Detach exhaust hanger -1-, and unbolt exhaust hanger -2-  
from body. Remove silencer.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:

they need to be renewed individually.

– Unscrew bolt -1-, and place exhaust pipe -2- on tunnel  
cross-piece.

– Press rubber mounting -arrow- off exhaust pipe pin -1-.  
– If fitted, pull connectors from exhaust flap control units on  
right and left off rear silencer.  
– Unscrew bolt -2- for rear right silencer -1-.  
– Unscrew bolt -2- for rear left silencer -1-.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:

To allow for removing the silencers without having to remove  
the rear axle, the rear silencer must be cut off.  
Removing  
– If fitted, remove rear left underbody cladding β‡’ General body  
repairs, exterior; Rep. gr. 66; Underbody cladding; Overview  
of fitting locations - underbody cladding.  
– Remove rear left vehicle level sender -G76- β‡’ Running gear,  
axles, steering; Rep. gr. 43; Vehicle level sender; Removing  
and installing rear vehicle level sender -G76-/-G77-.  
– Remove bolts -2- and position vehicle level sender so that it  
does not become damaged.  
– Loosen clamp -arrow-, and push it to rear.

CAUTION  
Risk of accident caused by high weight of silencers.  
– Seek help from a second a mechanic for the following  
work.  
– Unscrew bolts -1- for rear silencer, and detach exhaust  
hanger -2-.  
– Remove cross piece -1-, and unscrew bolt -2-.  
– Push exhaust system towards rear. Cut through rear silencer  
at right angles at separating point -arrow- using chain pipe  
cutter -VAS 6254- or pneumatic sabre saw -V.A.G 1523B-.

Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:  
– Position clamp for rear silencer centrally at side marks  
-arrows- when installing.  
– Turn clamp in such a way that there is sufficient clearance to  
adjacent components.  
– Align exhaust system free of stress β‡’ page 532 .  
– Install rear left vehicle level sender -G76- β‡’ Running gear,  
axles, steering; Rep. gr. 43; Vehicle level sender; Removing  
and installing rear vehicle level sender -G76-/-G77-.
