♦ Renew seals and self-locking nuts after they have been re‐
moved.
♦ After working on the exhaust system, ensure that the system
is not under stress and that there is sufficient clearance to
the bodywork. If necessary, loosen clamp and align silencers
and exhaust pipe so that sufficient clearance is maintained
to the bodywork at all points and the mountings are evenly
loaded.

Risk of accident caused by high weight of silencers.
– Seek help from a second a mechanic for the following
work.
– Loosen clamp -1- and push to rear.
– Press rubber mounting -3- off exhaust pipe pin.
– Unscrew bolt -6-.
– Remove bolts -4-, -5- and -2-.
– Carefully lower exhaust system.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
– Align exhaust system free of stress ⇒ page 532 .

CAUTION

– Secure exhaust pipe -1- on propshaft with tensioning strap
-2-.
– Unscrew bolts -1- for mounting -2-.
– Remove silencer -3-.

Sequence of operations
– Cut through exhaust pipe at right angles at separating point
-arrow- using chain pipe cutter -VAS 6254- or body saw
-VAS 6780-.
– Position clamp centrally at side marks -arrows- when instal‐
ling.
– Install clamping sleeve so that end of bolt -arrow- does not
extend beyond lower edge of clamping sleeve.
– Align exhaust system free of stress ⇒ page 532 .
– Tighten bolted connections evenly to 30 Nm.

– Push exhaust system towards front of vehicle until preload‐
ing at mounting for exhaust pipe -a- = 5 mm.
Aligning tailpipes, Golf
– Align rear silencer so that there is an equal distance be‐
tween bumper and exhaust pipes.
– Tighten clamp evenly.

Checking exhaust system for leaks
– Start engine and run it at idling speed.
– Seal end exhaust pipes with cloths or plugs, for example, for
the duration of the leakage test.
– Check (by listening) points of connection between exhaust
manifold and the cylinder head, between turbocharger and
front exhaust pipe etc. to make sure there are no leaks.
– Repair any leaks found.
