Allocation of main bearing shells
Bearing shells of the correct thickness are allocated to the cylin‐
der block at the factory. Coloured dots are used to identify the
thickness of the bearing shells.
Which bearing shell is to be inserted at each place in the cylin‐
der block (upper bearing shell) is marked by letters on the lower
sealing surface or on the front side of cylinder block.
Which bearing shell is to be inserted at each place in bearing
cap (lower bearing shell) is marked by letters on the crankshaft.

Note
The marking on the cylinder block can be found engraved either
in the sump sealing surface or in the front end (gearbox side) of
the cylinder block.
Identification on cylinder block is allocated to upper bearing
shell (bearing shell for cylinder block).

Installing
– Clean bearing seat in crankshaft and apply as thin coating of
grease.
– Drive needle bearing into crankshaft to installation depth us‐
ing drift -VW 207 C-.
Installation depth: dimension -a- = 2.0 mm
Note
If the needle bearing is inadvertently driven in too far, it must be
renewed because it will be damaged when it is pulled out again.

– Push crankshaft away from dial gauge and read off value.

Sequence of operations
Note
♦ Do not interchange used bearings.
♦ Bearing shells worn down to nickel layer must be renewed.
– Remove crankshaft bearing cap, and clean bearing cap and
bearing journal.
– Place a length of Plastigage corresponding to the width of
the bearing on the bearing journal or bearing shell.
•
The Plastigage must be positioned in the centre of the bear‐
ing shell.
– Fit crankshaft bearing cap, and tighten using old bolts
-1 to 10- ⇒ page 113 . Make sure not to rotate crankshaft
while tightening.
Note
Disregard bolts -arrows A-.
– Remove crankshaft bearing cap again.
– Compare width of Plastigage with the measurement scale.

– Unscrew conrod bearing cap.
– Remove crankshaft bearing cap.
– Remove crankshaft and unscrew sender wheel.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order. When installing,
note the following:
– Renew sender wheel -2- each time bolts -1- are loosened.
Note
♦ The second time the bolts are tightened, the contact points
in the sender wheel for the countersunk heads are deformed
so much that the bolt heads seat on the crankshaft -3-,
-arrows- and the sender wheel is loose under the bolts.
♦ The sender wheel can only be installed in one position; the
holes are offset.
– When the sender wheel is renewed, the adaption values
must be erased if this function is available in the engine/mo‐
tor control unit. To do this, connect vehicle diagnostic tester,
switch on ignition, and select the following menu option:
♦ 0001 - Engine electronics, functions
♦ 0001 - Reset adaptation values of engine ctrl.
