Note  
The engine is removed downwards with gearbox. To do this, the  
subframe needs to be removed.  
Sequence of operations  
CAUTION  
The cooling system could be under pressure. Hot steam/hot  
coolant can escape - risk of scalding.  
Skin and other parts of the body may be scalded.  
– Wear protective gloves.  
– Wear protective goggles.  
– Reduce excess pressure by covering cap of coolant ex‐  
pansion tank with suitable cloth and opening it carefully.  
– Open cap -arrow- for coolant expansion tank.  
– Remove subframe without steering rack β‡’ Running gear,  
axles, steering; Rep. gr. 40; Subframe; Removing and instal‐  
ling subframe without steering rack.  
– Remove front parts of left and right front wheel housing lin‐  
ers β‡’ General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr. 66; Wheel  
housing liner; Assembly overview - front wheel housing liner.  
– Disconnect electrical connector -1-.

– Place drip tray for workshop hoist -VAS 6208- underneath.  
– Lift retaining clip -3-, disconnect coolant hose (bottom right)  
from radiator and drain off coolant.  
– Remove engine cover panel β‡’ page 81 .  
– Remove air filter housing β‡’ page 443 .  
– Unscrew bolt -arrow- on left and right.  
– Unclip lower part of air duct -1- and remove it.  
– Disconnect battery β‡’ Electrical system; Rep. gr. 27; Battery;  
Disconnecting and connecting battery.  
– Battery in engine compartment: Remove battery tray -1-  
β‡’ Electrical system; Rep. gr. 27; Battery; Removing and  
installing battery tray.  
– Battery in luggage compartment: remove mounting for air  
filter housing.  
– Separate vacuum hose -2-.

– Press release tabs on vacuum hose -1-, and remove hose  
from vacuum pump.  
Vehicles without seat heating:  
– Lift retaining clips -arrows- and disconnect coolant hoses  
from heat exchanger for heater.  
– Hold coolant hoses downwards to allow coolant to drain.  
Vehicles with auxiliary heater:  
– Release hose clip -1-, lift retaining clips -arrows-, and dis‐  
connect coolant hoses.

Continued for all vehicles:  
– Detach electrical connectors -1, 2- from bracket, unplug con‐  
nectors and move electrical wiring clear.  
– Loosen clamp -1- for catalytic converter -2-, and push clamp  
onto turbocharger.  
CAUTION  
The fuel system is pressurised.  
Danger of injury through fuel spray.  
– Wear protective goggles.  
– Wear protective gloves.  
– To release pressure, wrap a clean cloth around the con‐  
nection and carefully loosen the connection.  
– Disconnect hose couplings -1- and -2- β‡’ Rep. gr. 20; Plug-in  
connectors; Disconnecting plug-in connectors. Detach hoses  
from coolant expansion tank -3-.  
– If fitted, unscrew bolt -arrow-.

– Release hose clips -1, 2-, and remove coolant hoses.

left) from radiator.

Note  
For the work steps below, use removal lever -80 - 200- to unclip  
the binding clips.  
Golf, Passat, Arteon:  
– Separate connector -1- on engine control unit -J623- β‡’ page  
473 .  
– Remove connectors -2, 3- from retainer and disconnect  
them.  
– Move electrical lines free.  
– Release catches -arrows- and detach cover -1- for electron‐  
ics box in engine compartment.  
– Release catch using a screwdriver -arrow- and detach cover  
-1- for electronics box in engine compartment upwards.

– Remove nut -arrow-, detach electrical wiring and move clear.  
Sharan:  
– Release and pull off connector on engine control unit -J623-

– Open cable duct latches on longitudinal member -arrows-.  
– Release and disconnect connectors -1- and -2-.

– Open locking elements -arrows- of cable guide, and place  
engine wiring harness -3- on engine.  
– Move electrical lines free.  
– Secure cables to engine using a cable tie.  
– Release fasteners -1- in -direction of arrow-, and remove  
cover -2- for electronics box in engine compartment.  
– Remove nut -arrow-, detach electrical wiring and move clear.

Vehicles with manual gearbox:  
– Disconnect electrical connector -2-.  
– Push back cover for battery positive terminal -1-, and unbolt  
battery positive cable from starter solenoid switch.  
– Unscrew nut -3- and remove earth wire.  
Note  
Depending on vehicle version, the earth wire is secured to the  
starter bolt.  
– Disconnect electrical connections at front left of gearbox.  
1 - For gearbox neutral position sender -G701-  
2 - For reversing light switch -F4-  
– Disconnect gear selector cable and gate selector cable from  
gearbox. Then, unbolt cable support bracket, and lay it to  
one side together with cables β‡’ Rep. gr. 34; Selector mech‐  
anism; Removing and installing selector mechanism.  
– Clamp off pipe/hose line -A- leading to slave cylinder using  
hose clamp -3094-.

– Pull out clip -arrow- for pipe/hose line to stop.  
– Pull pipe/hose line out of slave cylinder breather.  
Vehicles with dual clutch gearbox:  
– Disconnect electrical connector -1-.  
– Push back cover for battery positive terminal -3-, and unbolt  
battery positive cable from starter solenoid switch.  
– Loosen nut -arrow-, and remove earth wire.  
Note  
Depending on vehicle version, the earth wire is secured to the  
starter bolt.  
– Touch earth connection (without gloves) in order to dis‐  
charge yourself.  
– Do not touch contacts in the gearbox connector with hands.  
– Separate connector -2- for mechatronic unit for dual clutch  
gearbox -J743-. To do this, turn rotary fastener in anti-clock‐  
wise direction.  
– Disconnect selector lever cable from gearbox, and pull it out  
of cable support bracket β‡’ Rep. gr. 34; Selector mechanism;

Vehicles with automatic gearbox:  
– Using e. g. open-end spanner, lever selector lever cable -1-  
off gearbox selector lever -2-.  
– Pull connector -6- off multifunction switch -F125- and lay  
electrical wiring on bracket aside.  
– Unscrew bolts -5- from cable support bracket -4-. Do not  
detach securing clip -3-.  
– Unhook selector lever cable -1- from securing clip -arrow-.  
Note  
♦ Do not bend or kink selector lever cable.  
♦ To ensure that the cable is not a hindrance when removing  
and installing the gearbox, raise the cable to a suitable posi‐  
tion on the body and tie using e.g. cable ties.  
– Detach electrical connector from gearbox as follows. Push  
locking mechanism -1- in direction of arrow, fold out bar -2-,  
and pull connector -3- off gearbox.

– Separate electrical connectors from starter β‡’ Electrical sys‐  
tem; Rep. gr. 27; Starter; Removing and installing starter.  
Continued for all:  
– Loosen bolts -arrows- for gearbox mounting approx. 2 turns.  
– Loosen bolts -arrows- for engine mounting approx. 2 turns.  
– Loosen hose clips -arrows-, and remove charge air hose -A-.  
– Separate connector -1- for radiator fan. To do this, push re‐  
taining clip in direction of arrow -A-, and press down release  
catch.

– Simultaneously press locking tabs -B- on left and right of ra‐  
diator cowl. Detach radiator cowl, and remove it downwards  
from radiator.  
– Release hose clip -1- and -2- and remove right charge air  
hose.  
– Seal open lines and connections with clean plugs from en‐  
gine bung set -VAS 6122-.  
– Cover radiator using protective mat -VAS 531003-.  
– Free off coolant hose -3-.

– Unscrew bolts -arrows-.  
– Release hose clip -2-.  
– Separate electrical connector -1- from charge pressure  
sender -G31-.  
– Remove air pipe.  
Vehicles with auxiliary heater:  
– Loosen clamp -1-, unscrew bolt -2-, and remove silencer for  
auxiliary heater.  
Continued for all vehicles:  
– Before removing the poly V-belt, use a piece of chalk or a  
felt pen to mark the running direction.
