1 - Bolts for high-pressure  
pump  
❑ Tighten one turn al‐  
ternately until flange  
of high-pressure pump  
makes contact with  
vacuum pump  
❑ Final specified torque  
Bolts M6: 8 Nm + turn  
90Β° further, renew bolts  
after removing  
Bolts, M8: 20 Nm  
2 - Fuel pressure regulating  
valve -N276-  
3 - Electrical connector  
❑ For fuel pressure regu‐  
lating valve -N276-.  
4 - High-pressure pump  
❑ Fuel tank contains elec‐  
tric fuel pump which  
pumps fuel to me‐  
chanical high-pressure  
pump.  
❑ When installing the  
high-pressure pump, it  
is essential to ensure  
that no dirt enters the  
fuel system.  
❑ Install fuel lines free of  
stress.  
❑ Check O-ring and re‐  
new if damaged.  
❑ Removing and instal‐  
ling β‡’ page 488  
5 - O-ring

6 - Roller tappet  
❑ Installation position: roller faces towards camshaft  
7 - Connecting piece for fuel line  
❑ Only for engines with intake manifold injectors  
❑ When renewing high-pressure pump, the connecting piece may have to be transferred from the old  
pump  
❑ Loosen and tighten connecting piece using a Β»longΒ« 15 mm socket  
❑ Union, 15 Nm

8 - Spring-type clip

9 - Fuel line  
❑ Only for engines with intake manifold injectors  
❑ To fuel rail for injectors (intake manifold).

❑ Moisten ball of high-pressure pipe with engine oil  
❑ High-pressure pipe must be free of tension when installed (make sure all parts are clean)  
❑ Removing and installing β‡’ page 492  
❑ Union nut 27 Nm, wait for 1 minute and retighten to 27 Nm  
11 - High-pressure pipe union  
❑ When detaching from high-pressure pipe, hold connection to prevent it from twisting  
❑ If the connecting piece is released, it must be renewed.  
❑ 40 Nm  
12 - Fuel supply line  
13 - Spring-type clip  
❑ Renew

Removing and installing high-pressure  
pump  
Special tools and workshop equipment required  
♦ Tool insert, 17 mm -V.A.G 1331/6-  
Note  
♦ High-pressure pump may only be removed when the engine  
is cold.  
♦ When installing the high-pressure pump, it is essential to  
ensure that no dirt enters the fuel system.  
♦ Collect escaping fuel with a cleaning cloth.  
♦ Check O-ring of high-pressure pump and renew it if dam‐  
aged.  
♦ If high-pressure pipe connection β‡’ Item 11 (page 488) is  
released, it must be renewed.  
♦ The intake manifold injectors are not fitted on all engines.  
Removing  
– Remove engine cover panel β‡’ page 81 .  
– Remove air filter housing β‡’ page 443 .  
– Release fastener -arrow- and detach wiring duct -4- from  
coolant pipe.
