Removing and installing turbocharger,
Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Arteon
Note
♦ The turbocharger is removed upwards.
♦ If a mechanical fault is discovered on the turbocharger (e.g.
a destroyed compressor impeller), it is not sufficient to just
renew the turbocharger. To avoid any subsequent damage,
the following work must be carried out:
♦ Check air filter housing, air filter element and air inlet hoses
for contamination.
♦ Check the whole charge air path and charge air cooler for
foreign objects.
♦ If foreign objects are discovered in the charge air system,
clean the charge air path and, if necessary, renew the
charge air cooler.
♦ If bearing damage is evident on the removed turbocharger,
change the engine oil and filter.

– Pull off connectors -1- and -2-. Open retainer -3-.
– Pull off connectors -arrows-, and lay wiring harness to one
side.
– If fitted, unscrew bolt -1- for earth wire, and disconnect cool‐
ant hoses -2 and 3-. Seal lines with suitable plugs from the
engine bung set -VAS 6122-.
– Release fastener -arrow-, and remove wiring duct -4- up‐
wards from retainer.
– Unscrew bolts -1, 2 and 3-. Swivel coolant pipe to one side.
– Remove actuators for camshaft adjustment -1-.

between the cylinder head and plenum chamber bulkhead.
– Unscrew bolts -1, 2, 3- and remove pendulum support.
– Pull engine back approx. 20 mm with tensioning strap -
T10038-.

All vehicles:
– Unscrew nuts -arrows-.
– Remove turbocharger from cylinder head, and remove it up‐
wards.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
Note
♦ Renew seals, gaskets, O-rings and self-locking nuts.
♦ Check O-rings for camshaft adjusting elements for damage.
Undamaged O-rings can be re-used.
♦ Lubricate turbocharger studs with high-temperature paste.
For high-temperature, paste refer to ⇒ Electronic parts cata‐
logue (ETKA).
♦ Fill turbocharger with engine oil at connection for oil supply
line.
♦ Hose connections and hoses for charge air system must be
free of oil and grease before assembly.
♦ Secure all hose connections with the correct type of hose
clips (same as original equipment) ⇒ Electronic parts cata‐
logue (ETKA).
– Install front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter ⇒ page
550 .
– Align exhaust system free of stress ⇒ page 532 .
– Add coolant ⇒ page 282 .
– Check oil level.

After installing turbocharger, run engine for about 1 minute at
idling speed. Do not rev up immediately to ensure that the tur‐
bocharger is fully primed with oil.

Removing and installing turbocharger,

Note
♦ Turbocharger is removed downwards.
♦ If a mechanical fault is discovered on the turbocharger (e.g.
a destroyed compressor impeller), it is not sufficient to just
