Removing and installing flywheel

Removing
•
Gearbox is removed.
NOTICE
Risk of damaging flywheel.
– Unscrew bolts by hand. Do not use pneumatic wrenches or
other power impact wrenches.
– When removing the bolts, make sure that the bolt heads
do not come into contact with the flywheel.
– Insert counter-hold tool -3067- in hole on cylinder block
-item B-, loosen bolts for flywheel.
– Unscrew bolts -2-, and detach flywheel -1-.

Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
NOTICE
Oil may start to escape if threaded holes in crankshaft are not
cleaned or not cleaned properly.
– Clean threaded holes in crankshaft of adhesive residue
and locking fluid.
– Make sure not to damage oil seal when cleaning.
– Clean crankshaft flange until adhesive and locking fluid resi‐
due is removed completely.
– Vacuum off loosened particles of locking fluid residue using
industrial vacuum cleaner – never blow them out with com‐
pressed air.
– Use commercially available wire brush to completely remove
any sealant residue from one of the flywheel bolts which was
unscrewed during removal.
– Screw the cleaned bolt -2- in and out the threaded hole of
crankshaft -1- until no more locking fluid residue comes out.
– During the cleaning process, permanently hold an industrial
vacuum cleaner at the threaded connection in order to col‐
lect the locking fluid residue that comes out.
– Repeat cleaning process for all threaded holes of crankshaft.
– Remove oil residue using commercially available oil dissolv‐
ing agent.
– Use a cloth to clean the flange of the crankshaft. Crankshaft
threads must be free of oil and grease.

NOTICE
Risk of damaging flywheel.
– Mount flywheel in such a way that bolts align centrally with
holes.
– Screw in bolts by hand. Do not use pneumatic wrenches or
other power impact wrenches.
– Screw in bolts for flywheel as far as stop in diagonal se‐
quence.
– Insert counter-hold tool -3067- in hole in cylinder block -A-
and tighten bolts.

Removing
•
Gearbox is removed.
– Remove flywheel ⇒ page 104 .
– Detach intermediate plate from sealing flange and dowel
pins -arrows-.
– Unscrew bolts -1 … 8-.
– Prise off sealing flange.
Installing
Note
♦ Observe use-by date of silicone sealant.
♦ The sealing flange must be installed within 5 minutes of
applying the silicone sealant.
♦ In order to prevent the lubrication system from being soiled
with sealant residue cover the open section of the sump with
a clean cloth.
CAUTION
Risk of eye injury caused by sealant residue.
– Wear protective goggles.
– Remove sealant remaining on cylinder block with flat scraper
or rotating plastic brush.

– Clean sealing surfaces. They must be oil and grease free.
– Clean crankshaft journal. If there is any rust, lightly coat
crankshaft journal with oil.
– Cut off nozzle on tube at front marking (∅ of nozzle approx.
2 mm).
– Apply silicone sealant as shown to clean sealing surface of
sealing flange.
♦ Thickness of sealant bead: 2 to 3 mm.

Note
♦ The sealing flange must be installed within 5 minutes after
applying the silicone sealant.
♦ The bead of sealant must not be thicker than specified, oth‐
erwise excess sealant can enter the sump and obstruct the
strainer in the oil intake pipe.
♦ Check sealing flange; it must be free of kinks and damage.
♦ The sealing lip must face engine following installation. If
the sealing lip »folds out« during installation, oil leaks may
occur.
– Check guide -T10122/6- -(B)-; it must be clean and free of
sharp edges.
– Attach assembly aid -T10122/1- -(A)- to guide -(B)-.
– Push sealing flange -C-, leading with the outer side, onto
guide -B-.
– Remove assembly aid -A-.

– Put guide -A- with sealing flange -B- onto crankshaft journal.
– It is not necessary to tighten the bolts -arrows-.
– Push sealing flange -B- over guide -A- onto crankshaft jour‐
nal.
– Remove guide -A-.
– Tighten new bolts evenly in the sequence shown.

Note
After installing the sealing flange, wait about 30 minutes for the
sealant to dry. Only then fill with engine oil.
Further assembly is basically a reverse of the dismantling se‐
