Brake assist systems
Information regarding brake assist systems
Brake assist systems can help the driver in critical
driving or braking situations. The driver is responsible
for driving safely ÿ .
Fig. 175 In the infotainment system: display of the
park exit assistant.
When the relevant brake assist system regulates,
continue to brake hard enough and, if necessary,
control the trajectory of the vehicle.
The park exit assistant works with radar sensors mounted
in the rear bumper.
WARNING
The system detects objects approaching or moving from
behind or from the sides ÿ fig. 174 and warns the driver
of possible obstacles ÿ .
The intelligent technology of brake assist systems
cannot overcome the limits imposed by the laws of
physics and only works within the limits of the systems.
Driving at high speed on icy, slippery or wet roads can
cause loss of vehicle control and serious injury to the
driver and passengers.
If there is an obstacle, a warning signal sounds.
Depending on the equipment, the obstacle area is
displayed in color in the infotainment system ÿ fig. 175
or a warning or control lamp is displayed with a
message in the instrument panel.
· Always adapt your speed and driving style to the
visibility, weather, road and traffic conditions.
Never take any risk that compromises safety.

be temporarily switched off.
— ESC, ABS and ASR can only work properly if all
four wheels have the intended tires ÿ .
Particularities in case of towing a trailer
The park exit assist is deactivated if the factory-fitted
towing hitch is electrically connected to a trailer.
— If there is a fault in the ABS, the ESC, ASR and EDS
also stop working.
When the ignition is switched on, the status of the
braking functions is automatically checked. The control
indicators light up briefly and go out again. If any control
indicator remains on, there is a fault. Immediately go to
a suitably qualified specialist workshop.

components or systems that affect driving dynamics have not
been properly maintained or do not function correctly. This
can occur especially if suspension modifications are made or
unauthorized wheel and tire combinations are used.
brake booster
The brake booster only works with the engine running and is
responsible for increasing the pressure that the driver exerts on
the brake pedal.
If the brake booster does not work or the vehicle is towed, the
brake pedal must be depressed more forcefully, as the stopping
distance increases due to the lack of assistance from the brake
booster ÿ .
· Only have the necessary alterations and modifications to the
vehicle carried out by qualified specialist workshops.
Volkswagen recommends a Volkswagen dealer.
· Always use suitable tires. Driving stability depends on the
grip of the tyres.
WARNING
If you are driving without a brake booster or with limited brake
booster function, the stopping distance may be greatly
increased and serious accidents and injuries may result.
Electronic Stabilization Program (ESC)
The ESC is regulating to reduce the risk of skidding
and improve stability ÿ .
· Never turn off the engine or switch off the ignition when the
vehicle is moving.
The control indicator flashes yellow.
Acceleration Anti-Skid Regulation (ASR)
· If the brake booster does not work or the vehicle is towed,
you will need to apply more force on the brake pedal, as
the stopping distance increases due to the lack of
assistance from the brake booster.
The ASR is regulating to prevent the wheels from
slipping. The control indicator flashes yellow.
ASR reduces the driving force on the slipping wheels and
adapts this force to the road conditions. ASR makes starting,
accelerating and climbing hills easier ÿ .
· Always leave the area under the pedals free so that the
brake pedal can move freely.

WARNING
When ESC is off, the danger of the vehicle skidding is
much higher. Especially at high speed, inexperienced drivers
may find it difficult to control the vehicle. This can lead to
accidents and serious injuries!
Electronic differential lock (EDS and XDS)
The EDS automatically brakes the slipping wheels and
transfers the drive power to the other drive wheels.
XDS improves traction by intervening on the brakes to keep the
vehicle in its lane.
· Only turn off the ESC when you are driving on a closed circuit
and have practiced a sporty driving style.
multi collision brake
The multi-collision brake automatically causes braking if the
airbag control unit detects a collision in the event of an accident.
· Only connect ESC Sport when you are driving on a closed
circuit and have practiced a sporty driving style.

Noise from brake assist systems
ASR
When the brake assist systems are regulating, the brake
pedal may move or noise may be produced.
Disengaging ASR can help when driving on rough ground
or to “unstuck” the vehicle if it becomes stuck ÿ .
1. Even so, continue to brake hard enough and, if
necessary, control the trajectory of the vehicle.

WARNING
This function helps when driving with a sporty driving
style. The ESC intervenes later than to stabilize the
vehicle, e.g. For example, on routes with curves taken
at high speed ÿ .
If the brake system warning light illuminates
together with the control light , the ABS control
function may not work and the rear wheels may
therefore lock relatively quickly when braking.
This can cause loss of control of the vehicle!
