Introduction to the topic
Basic functions
Proactive occupant protection is an assistance
system that activates a series of measures to
protect the vehicle occupants in dangerous
situations, but cannot prevent a collision.
In critical driving situations, e.g. For example, in case
of emergency braking or understeer and oversteer,
the following functions can be activated separately or
at the same time:
— Reversible tightening of the driver's and
passenger's seat belts if they are worn.
Speed range The
basic functions of proactive occupant protection are
available when driving forward at speeds above
approx. 30 km/h (19 mph).
— Depending on the equipment, automatic closing
of the glass roof and the windows until there is
only one crack.
— Activation of emergency flashers
WARNING
Depending on how critical the driving situation is,
the belts can be tightened individually or all at the
same time.
The intelligent technology of proactive occupant
protection cannot overcome the limits imposed
by the laws of physics and only works within the
limits of the system. Never let the increased comfort
provided by Proactive Occupant Protection induce
you to take any risk that compromises safety. The
system cannot avoid a collision. The system cannot
replace the driver's attention.
Additional functions in vehicles with emergency
braking assistant (Front Assist)
In vehicles with emergency brake assist (Front
Assist), the probability of a rear-end collision with
the vehicle in front is also calculated within the
limits of the system. The system can activate
proactive occupant protection if it detects that a
rear-end collision is likely or if it causes sudden
braking.
· Always adapt the speed and the safety distance
with respect to the preceding vehicle depending
on the visibility, weather, road and traffic
conditions.
Additional features in vehicles with assistant
lane change (Side Assist)
· The system cannot always recognize objects.
In vehicles with Lane Change Assist (Side Assist),
· Proactive occupant protection does not react
to animals or difficult-to-detect objects.
the probability of a rear-end collision by the vehicle
behind is also calculated within the limits of the
system. If the system detects that a rear-end
collision is likely, it can activate proactive occupant
protection. If the system detects that there is a risk
of a collision, it can activate, in addition to the basic
functions, the emergency flashers with a fast flash
frequency.
· Reflective objects, e.g. For example, guardrails,
tunnel entrances, heavy rain and ice can impair
the performance of proactive occupant
protection and thus the ability to detect the risk
of a collision.
· It may happen that the system activates falsely.
Additional functions in vehicles with emergency
assistance (Emergency Assist)
On vehicles with Emergency Assist, if the system
detects no driver activity, it can activate proactive
occupant protection.
Depending on the set activation level, the following
functions are activated:
fifty
Security
— Brief or permanent reversible tightening of the
driver's seat belt if it is worn.
Problems and solutions
— Depending on the equipment, automatic closing
of the glass roof and the windows until there is
only one crack.

Adjustment in driving profile selection In
vehicles with driving profile selection, proactive
occupant protection adapts to the special vehicle
configuration of the corresponding profile.
— Proactive occupant protection is not available or
its functionality is limited. Shut off the engine and
restart it.
— If the fault persists, go to a duly qualified
specialized workshop and have the proactive
occupant protection checked. Volkswagen
recommends a Volkswagen dealer.
Settings in the infotainment system
Depending on the equipment, settings for proactive
occupant protection with all its functions can be
made in the vehicle settings of the infotainment
system.
Depending on the anomaly in question,
additional information may be displayed under
Vehicle status ÿ p. 41.
Proactive occupant protection is activated again
each time the ignition is switched on.
The setting cannot be carried out if the proactive
occupant protection has already been adapted to the
special configuration of the vehicle.

Introduction to the topic
Limitations of Proactive
Occupant Protection
The vehicle is equipped with frontal airbags for the
driver and front passenger. Frontal air bags can
provide additional protection for the thorax and head
of the driver and front passenger when the seat, seat
belts, head restraints, and steering wheel (for the
driver) are properly adjusted and used properly. .
Airbags are only designed to offer additional protection.

legal provisions of the country in question and the
equipment of the vehicle.
In the following situations proactive occupant
protection is not available or only to a limited extent:
— The ESC, the reversible seat belt pretensioners
ÿ p. 44 or the airbag control unit ÿ p. 51 do not
work correctly.
WARNING
Never rely solely on the air bag system to
protect you.
— ASR is disabled or ESC is limited ÿ p. 224.
When triggered , airbags only offer one function
additional protective action.
— Offroad driving profile has been adjusted .
— There is a fault in the brake assist
emergency (Front Assist) or its operation is limited.
The airbag system offers the best protection
tion, reducing the risk of injury, in combination
with properly fitted seat belts ÿ p. 44.
— There is a fault in the lane change assistant (Side
Assist) or its operation is limited.
· Before starting the walk, always sit down
Prepare in the correct position, always wear the
seat belt corresponding to your seat correctly
and always wear it correctly throughout the
journey. This applies to all occupants of the
vehicle and also for urban journeys.
— There is a fault in the emergency assistant
(Emergency Assist) or its function is limited.
— Reverse gear is engaged.
