7. Position the starter cables so that they cannot be reached by
any rotating part in the engine compartment.
Β· Also, make sure that the cable connected to the positive
pole of the 12 volt battery does not come into contact with
electrically conductive parts of the vehicle.
Vehicles with the 12 volt battery in the male
tero can provide starting assistance to other vehicles
through the sockets provided for this purpose
(positive pole + and ground terminal β).
Β· Avoid electrostatic discharges in the area of the 12 volt
battery. If sparks were to fly, the detonating gas escaping
from the battery could ignite.
start the engine
1. Start the engine of the power-supplying vehicle and let it idle.
Β· Never use the jump start if the 12 volt battery is damaged or
frozen, or if it has been thawed.
2. Start the engine of the vehicle with the discharged 12 volt
battery and wait 2 to 3 minutes for the engine to βcrank

WARNING
After using the starting aid, have the 12 volt battery checked by
a qualified specialist workshop. Volkswagen recommends a
Volkswagen dealer.
Disconnect jumper cables
1. If the dipped beam is on, turn it off before disconnecting the
jumper cables.
2. Connect the fan of the air conditioner or the system

Introduction to the topic
Towing a vehicle takes practice, especially when using a tow rope.
Both drivers should be familiar with the ins and outs of towing.
Inexperienced drivers should refrain from towing.
3. With the engines running, disconnect the AC
starting cables only in the order D β C β B β A ΓΏ fig. 228 or
ΓΏ fig. 229.
4. If necessary, close the battery cover or the socket cover for

Observe the legal provisions regarding towing.
5. After using the starting aid, have the 12 volt battery checked
by a qualified specialist workshop. Volkswagen recommends

If jump starting aid is used improperly, the 12 volt battery
could explode and cause serious injury. To reduce the risk
of a battery exploding, note the following:
Towing means pulling a vehicle from another that is not in a
condition to circulate.
The vehicle can be towed with a tow bar or cable:
Β· Always wear suitable eye protection and protective gloves,
and never lean over the 12 volt battery.
β The maximum speed allowed is 50 km/h (30 mph).
β The maximum distance allowed is 50 km (30 miles).
Β· Connect the connection cables in the correct order: first the
positive cable, and then the negative cable.
The tow bar is safer for towing and prevents damage to the
vehicle.

Pushing the vehicle with your hands can damage
the rear light assemblies, the rear window side
spoilers and large areas of sheet metal.
Also, the rear spoiler could come off.
The tow rope must be elastic so that there is no
damage to the vehicles. Use a synthetic fiber cord or
similar elastic material.
Β· If you have to push the vehicle, do not allow it to
press on the rear light units, the spoilers on the
sides of the window, large sheet metal surfaces
or the rear spoiler.

WARNING
Using a towing eye that is not suitable for the vehicle
can damage the vehicle.
When a vehicle is towed, the driving behavior and
braking ability change considerably.
Β· When towing, always use the towing eye that
corresponds to the vehicle, which is part of the
on-board tools, or an eye appropriate for it.
WARNING
Never allow the vehicle to be towed without
power.
Β· When towing, never switch off the ignition with
the start/start button. Otherwise, the electronic
steering column lock could suddenly engage.
The vehicle could no longer be steered. This
could cause an accident, serious injury and loss
of control of the vehicle.
Instructions for towing

moved to the basic position, the hazard warning
lights switch on again automatically.
Β· If the vehicle loses power during towing, stop the
process immediately and request the help of
specialized personnel.
Cases in which the vehicle should never be
towed
Do not allow the vehicle to be towed in the
following situations: β The 12 volt battery is

Towing the vehicle with a cable or tow bar can
cause damage to the vehicle.
β The indicator on the instrument panel display
does not work correctly.
Β· If the vehicle is towed with a cable or a tow bar,
special care must be taken.
β They have to travel more than 50 kilometers (30 mi
