Only carry out work on the engine cooling system yourself if
you are familiar with the necessary operations and the generally
applicable safety measures, and if you have the appropriate
tools, media and operating fluids. Improper work can lead to

When topping up engine coolant, use a mixture of
distilled water and at least 40% of G 12 evo coolant
additive for optimal corrosion protection ÿ .

WARNING
· Never store coolant in food cans, bottles or other
empty containers, as it could be swallowed by
someone.
If the engine cooling system does not have
sufficient antifreeze protection, the engine could
fail, resulting in serious injury.

Engine coolant specifications
Note and , on page 331, and , at the beginning
of this chapter, on page 340.
The engine cooling system is factory-filled with a
mixture of specially treated water and at least 40% of
the G 12 evo (TL-VW 744 L) coolant additive.
Engine coolant and its additives can pollute the
environment. Whether
any operating fluid leaks out, collect it and dispose
of it properly and in an environmentally friendly
manner.
To protect the engine cooling system, the percentage
of additive must always be at least 40%. If greater
antifreeze protection is required for climatic reasons,
the proportion of additive can be increased. However,
only up to a maximum of 55%, because otherwise the
antifreeze protection would be reduced and, in turn,
the cooling effect would be worsened.
Check engine coolant level and
top up engine coolant
This additive is recognized by its purple coloration.
This mixture of water and additive not only offers
antifreeze protection down to -25 °C (-13 °F), but
also protects the light-alloy parts of the cooling system
against corrosion, prevents lime deposits and increases
the boiling point of the coolant considerably.

no properly qualified engine repair shop nearby,
check the level and top up the coolant.

WARNING
Steam and hot engine coolant can cause severe
burns.

· Never open the front hood if you see or hear steam
or coolant escaping from the engine compartment.
Always wait for it to stop being seen or heard.
If you touch parts that are hot, you may get
burned skin.
When a new vehicle is delivered , the engine
coolant may be above the marked area. This is
normal. Do not suck the coolant.
· When the engine is hot, its cooling system is
under pressure. Never open the engine coolant
expansion tank cap when the engine is hot.
Failure to do so could cause coolant to splatter
and cause serious burns and other injuries.
1. With the engine cold, check the coolant level at
the side marks on the expansion tank ÿ fig. 243.
The coolant level must be between the marks.
2. If the level does not reach the minimum mark
(“min”) on the reservoir, have the engine coolant
added. When the engine is warm, the coolant
level may be slightly above the upper mark.
— Turn the cover slowly and very carefully anti-
clockwise while applying light pressure on it.

5. Check the coolant level the next day.
If the level drops below the minimum mark “min”
again , go to a qualified specialist workshop and
have the cooling system checked. Volkswagen
recommends a Volkswagen dealer.
6. If engine coolant with prescribed specifications is
not available in an emergency, do not use any
other coolant additives ÿ .
WARNING
· When adding engine coolant, do not exceed the
upper edge of the marked area. Otherwise, when
the temperature rises, the excess fluid will be
expelled from the engine's cooling system and
could cause damage.
Fig. 244 In the engine compartment: brake fluid
reservoir cover.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time.
An excessive water content in the brake fluid causes
damage to the brake system. The effect of water
significantly reduces the boiling point of brake fluid. If
the water content in the brake fluid is excessive,
vapor bubbles can form in the brake system under
heavy stress or under hard braking. Bubbles reduce
braking ability, considerably increase stopping distance
and can even cause failure of the entire braking
system. Your safety and that of other road users
depends on the proper functioning of the braking
system at all times ÿ .
· If, in an emergency, coolant with the prescribed
specifications is not available, add only distilled
water. Then have a qualified specialist workshop
add the prescribed additive in the correct proportion
as soon as possible. Volkswagen recommends a
Volkswagen dealer.
· Use only distilled water! All other types of water
contain chemicals that could cause extensive
engine corrosion damage. This could also cause
engine failure. If you have added non-distilled
water, immediately have all the fluid in the engine
cooling system changed by a qualified specialist
workshop.

has developed a special brake fluid optimized for the
vehicle's brake system. To ensure optimal function
of the brake system, Volkswagen expressly
recommends the use of brake fluid in accordance
with the VW 501 14 standard.
· Do not add engine coolant if the expansion tank is
completely empty!
Air could have entered the cooling system. Do
not continue driving and ask for help from a duly
qualified specialized workshop.
Before using a brake fluid, check whether the
specifications of the brake fluid, which appear on the
packaging, meet the requirements of the vehicle.
Otherwise, the motor could be damaged! Volks
wagen recommends a Volkswagen dealer.
· When replenishing operating fluids, make sure you
pour the correct fluids into the correct fill ports.
Using the wrong operating fluids can cause serious
malfunctions and engine damage.
Brake fluid that meets the VW standard 501 14 can
be purchased from Volkswagen dealers.
If such a brake fluid is not available and a different,
high-quality one has to be used, a brake fluid that
meets the requirements of DIN ISO 4925 or the
American standard FMVSS 116 DOT 4 CLASS can
be used. 6.
